When you're creating a website, brochure, poster, or even just a document, you may not realize how important your font choice is to the overall effect of your piece. To many people, letters are letters, regardless of whether they're spelling out words to describe tamper evident seals or impressionism. But before you simply use whatever font your word processing program automatically assigns to your document, read this article about how to choose font styles for maximum appeal and impact.

Try to choose something that will compliment the topic you're covering. When talking about framed art, for example, you might use a loopier more artistic font, perhaps a handwriting style. Whereas if you were talking about a futuristic airplane, you might use a font that has blocked letters with clean edges in order to bring to mind the stereotypes of science and technology.

Your computer comes with its own store of fonts, and some programs will add more to the fold. It's easy to scroll through the list and view the sample texts to choose a suitable bone-like font for the logo of your otoplasty clinic. However, if you will remember, everyone who has the same computer or program will have the same fonts, which means they will seem quite common. To augment your storehouse of fonts, you can download free and paid fonts from the internet. Just be careful to read the license agreement to see what you can and can't use them for.

When choosing a font, focus on two things: readability and suitability. Suitability we've already talked about, but readability is important too. The block typesetter style font you would find on a front license plate bracket is very easy to read, but some fonts that are designed to look like handwriting or to use images (such as water drops or fire) to spice up the look of the font can be difficult to read. If you're using a fancy font, test its readability on a control group first.

If it's a website you're designing rather than a poster ad for Mississauga office space, you'll also have the added obstacle of browser readability. Writing your text in a certain font in word processing and pasting it into HTML will not bring the font along. You need to designated the font in the font or text tag. However, not all browsers will be able to recognize all font styles, so on some computers your fancy font will show up as the boring base font.
